What You’ll See:

Dragon gates, red lanterns and pagodas

  • America’s first planned “Chinatown”
  • Wishing wells and koi ponds
  • Chinese herb merchants
  • Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai restaurants
  • Chinese and Asian curio shops
  • Historic buildings

Tour Starts: Chinatown Station. The station, just one stop from Union Station on the Gold Line is just a few blocks from Olvera Street.

Tour Ends: Chinatown Station

How to Get There: If you’re coming from any distance, there are 3 options:

  • By Rail: Take Metrorail! The tour starts at the Chinatown Station on the Gold Line which intersects with Union Station, which intersects with the Red and Purple Lines, Metrolink and Amtrak. Metrorail, Metrolink, and Amtrak offer maps, fares, trip planner and station location information.
  • By Bus: Visit the Metro site for bus transit maps, fares, trip planner and stops nearest you.
  • By Car: Street parking is available in Chinatown but watch the restrictions and watch the time limits. Garages are available, too and some validate with participating shops and restaurants.

Tour Length: This is a relatively short walking tour; 2 hours should easily do it. But be sure to allow extra time for lunch.

Optional Side Trips: There are no Side Trips offered on this Tour.

How Much Walking? About 1 mile total – all of it over flat terrain. The tour is wheelchair accessible.

Tour Cost: Once you’re downtown, nothing. If you want to save your feet, the DASH bus through Chinatown costs 35¢ per boarding (weekdays only).

When to Go: The best time to begin the tour is mid- or late-morning between 10 am – 11 am so you can include a snack, lunch or dinner in your tour. Weekdays are a little busier and maybe a little more fun. On weekdays the DASH “B” bus runs through Chinatown which can save some time if time is tight. If you visit on a weekend try to combine this tour with Union Station/Olvera Street.

Where to Eat: Click here for ideas and suggestions.

You Can Combine This Tour With:

  1. Union Station Tour: About 2 hours. Follow directions at the end of “The Tour.”
