City Hall Observation Deck Side Trip

Side Trip! This is it – the best view of downtown L.A.!

You’ll see almost the entire city spread out below you and it’ll take just about 30 minutes. It’s open weekdays only, from 8:00 am 0 5:00 pm. Admission is free.

OK, so it’s not the Empire State Building, but there’s no finer observation point anywhere in downtown L.A.!

This Side Trip is wheelchair accessible.

–> From the security check point at the Main Street entrance it’s just a few steps to the Visitor Elevators.

–> Take the elevators to the 22nd floor.

–> Transfer to elevator that brings you to the 26th floor level.

–> From the elevator lobby proceed up the steps to the 27th flloor.

All elevators are clearly marked. The 26th floor walls are lined with portraits of most of the city’s mayors and the steps up to the 27th floor features a bust of Mayor Tom Bradley. An elevator is also available for the one-flight ascent, should you need one.

Because City Hall is on the northeast fringe of downtown, its Observation Deck gives a complete view of the city’s skyline (lacking only the building you’re standing in). You’ll see the Hollywood sign, Chinatown, the L.A. River, Union Station, Little Tokyo, and if the weather permits, the mountains to the north and east, Long Beach to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

–> Return back to the Visitor’s Entrance (3rd Floor) to continue the tour.
